2 quakes hit Davao January 6

TWO moderate earthquakes hit Mindanao Monday, January 6, 2020, this time with the epicenters located in Davao Occidental and Davao Oriental.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said a magnitude 5 earthquake struck Sarangani in Davao Occidental around 3:25 p.m. The epicenter was located 31 kilometers west of Sarangani.

The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 17 kilometers. It was felt in the following areas:

* Intensity 5 - Sarangani, Davao Occidental

* Intensity 4 - Glan, Sarangani

* Intensity 3 - General Santos City

* Intensity 2 - Kiamba, Malungon and Alabel, Sarangani; Polomolok and Tupi, South Cotabato

Instrumental intensities were felt in the following:

* Intensity 3 - General Santos City

* Intensity 2 - Malungon, Alabel and Kiamba, Sarangani; Tupi, South Cotabato

* Intensity 1 - Koronadal City; Kidapawan City

Phivolcs said aftershocks are to be expected, but no damage has been reported as of Monday afternoon.

Earlier, a magnitude 5.4 quake also struck Davao Oriental, with the epicenter located 72 kilometers east of Governor Generoso. The tremor struck at 2:58 a.m. Monday.

The quake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 50 kilometers.

Intensity 4 was felt in Governor Generoso, Davao Oriental, while instrumental intensities were felt in the following areas:

* Intensity 3 - Alabel and Malungon, Sarangani;

* Intensity 2 - Kiamba, Sarangani; General Santos City; Tupi, South Cotabato;

* Intensity 1 - Koronadal City

Phivolcs said aftershocks were expected, but so far, no damage has been reported. (EZN/SunStar Philippines)
