A MAGNITUDE 7.1 earthquake hit off the coast of Davao Oriental province on Saturday morning, December 29.

Initial data from the United States Geological Survey showed that a 7.2 magnitude underwater earthquake happened at 11:39 a.m. today.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was recorded at 11:39 a.m., Saturday, and epicenter was located at 162 kilometers southeast of Governor Generoso town.

Phivolcs said the public may expect aftershocks, strong currents, and rapid rise and fall of seawaters.

The agency warned the public "to stay away from the beach and not to go to the coast fronting Philippine Sea" of these following provinces:

- Compostela Valley

- Davao del Norte

- Davao del Sur

- Davao Oriental

- Davao City

- Sarangani

- South Cotabato

- Agusal del Norte

- Agusan del Sur

- Surigao del Norte

- Surigao del Sur

"Coastal areas in Philippine provinces fronting the Philippine Sea are expected to experience wave heights of less than one meter

above the normal tide levels," Phivolcs said.

People living near the shoreline of these provinces are also advised to "move farther inland."

Phivolcs said "the first tsunami waves will arrive between 12:00 p.m. to 2 p.m." Adding that, "These waves may continue for hours." (SunStar Philippines)
