Custodio: On life gone haywire

Nina S. Custodio

LIFE is pretty unpredictable and it also isn’t. Most days you would think that you have everything covered and that things can be pretty mundane. Everyday things have the tendency to be like that and sort of end up being taken for granted. Yeah, it gets quite routinary and boring sometimes. Same old, same old as they would say. Correct? Well, until something totally awful actually happens. Something uncalled for that turns your world upside down and your head spinning! These unexpected events just pop out of nowhere and it usually leaves us at a loss doesn’t it? Sort of in a daze and confused. Like, what the hell happened?

That’s the feeling one gets when things are out of your control. It can be unnerving and disheartening. You feel helpless and hopeless, even. You wonder if you’re going to sink or swim and at some point, might think that the light at the end of the tunnel is a lot farther than you hoped and prayed it would be not. For one brief moment, you wonder if you would ever make it. I’m sure you thought of that too. We all did so don’t fret.

Trying times will always come so I guess we should expect the unexpected, anyway. We will never be truly ready for it but who is? We just need to be positive. Right. Recent events have made me realize that it is easier said than done, that is, for anyone to say or stay positive. It may come easy (or naturally) for some, but not everyone is wired the same way. Not everyone will see silver linings and the light, they will get stuck on the gray clouds and the tunnel. Pretty much, that’s all they will ever see. Unless they make an effort to go beyond it

We can always try. Try. Try. And try until we learn to see possibilities rather than setbacks. The road may not be easy but if we are patient and persevering, we can do it. Lately, I saw how people never try or quit easily to achieve it and it makes me sad. It takes more than patience, will and fortitude. Sometimes it requires humility too as we are not infallible nor are we invincible. We need to accept certain truths, even if we do not like them nor agree with them. By doing so, we can hopefully start towards being better and living life to the fullest.
