Espedilla: Are there medical causes of obesity?

Dr. Fritz Espedilla, MD

DEAR Dr. Fritz,

I am Jane C. I have this problem that I have been carrying for about a year now. I have become overweight. I don’t know why because I am not eating a lot – and yet, I am getting fatter and fatter. A friend told me that I might be suffering from certain diseases. I don’t know if she is right. But, her words definitely sent chills to my spine. This is why I wrote you. I wanted to know if there are medical causes of obesity.

Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

Jane C.

Dear Jane C.,

Obesity is really caused by overeating. But, if you don’t eat that much and yet you are gaining weight, then, we can turn the tide to the medical causes of obesity. Yes! Your friend is right. There are medical causes of obesity. Let me name some.

1. Hypothyroidism

This is a condition where the thyroid gland, which is located in the neck, produces too little thyroid hormone which regulates our metabolism. So, if you have too little of this hormone your metabolism will slow down and often this causes weight gain.

2. Cushing’s syndrome

This results when the adrenal glands would produce excessive amount of a steroid hormone called cortisol, which would lead to a build-up of fat in characteristic sites such as the face, upper back, and abdomen.

3. Depression

Some people who are depressed gets to overeat, which can lead to obesity.

4. Certain inherited conditions and other diseases of the brain

Do not also discount the effect of certain medications, like steroids, and some antidepressants, antipsychotics, high blood pressure drugs, and seizure medications. These can also help increase your body weight.

Needless to say, you should see your physician to check if you have any of the conditions that I have just mentioned.

Good luck!

Dr. Fritz
