DAVAO City’s Alfred Moulic emerged leg champion of the Davao Region Beating C19 Online Tournament, dubbed as Beating the Covid-19 Attack Grand Prix Series recently.

Moulic, with username Brendarita77, tallied 28 points in the chessfest organized by lawyer Jong Guevarra Jr. of Toril, Davao City.

He bested fellow Dabawenyos Eric Fernandez (fernz_eric) and Sherwin Orbeta (kingsherwin) who placed second and third, respectively.

Fernandez earned 22 while Orbeta made 20 points.

The top three placers received mobile loads worth P100, P60 and P40.

Moulic, who hails from Buhangin and father of De La Salle University chess varsity scholar Ella Grace, outclassed players Jim Briken Diabakid (diabakid), Sherwin Orbeta (kingsherwin), Reynaldo Gempero (sanovsky), Joeawi Dimaampao (joeawi), Renard Mamaril (Renard19), Lyndon Sombilon (lucasliam), Nofre Reyes (Reyesshevsky) and Sombilon.

Moulic, in a Facebook interview with SunStar Davao yesterday, said he prefers playing online than doing a face-to-face encounter.

“Different, walay kaba (It’s different, there’s no nervousness),” he said.

He, however, said the challenge in competing in online games is slow internet connection, which could affect a player’s chances to win.

But Moulic added, “Pero much better ni, walay engagement sa mismong kalaban nimo, to avoid Covid-19 (This is better though since there is no personal engagement with your opponent, as a preventive measure from Covid-19).”

Guevarra, meanwhile, said he organized the online tournament via lichess.org and is open to all Mindanao chesers.

“Series ni siya meaning six tourneys naa siyay corresponding points per tourney then at the end of the 6 tourneys the top 3 scores will be declared winners (This is a series of six tournaments with points at stake per tournament then the top three scorers after the series will be declared champions),” the sports patron said, adding that the online competition aims to provide a venue for woodpushers to still compete even while under home quarantine due to Covid-19.
