Philippines sees nearly 5,000 additional cases, sets new high

FOR the third straight day, the Department of Health (DOH) reported a record setting number of new coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases, this time having nearly 5,000 coronavirus-positive individuals.

Based on its August 1 case bulletin, the DOH reported 4,963 additional Covid-19 cases. This is higher than the previous record high of 4,063 new cases reported Friday, July 31.

This brought the total case count to 98,232.

Majority of the new cases reported Saturday, August 1, came from the National Capital Region (NCR) with 2,667.

Also seeing high number of cases are Cavite (405), Cebu (355), Laguna (324), and Rizal (252).

Of the confirmed cases, the DOH report showed that there were 17 new deaths recorded. This means that there are now a total of 2,039 fatalities due to Covid-19.

The new deaths were from NCR (five or 29 percent), Calabarzon (five or 29 percent), Central Visayas (four or 24 percent), Ilocos Region (two or 12 percent), and Zamboanga Peninsula (one or six percent).

Of the 17 deaths, 13 (76 percent) happened in July and four (24 percent) in June.

Meanwhile, the DOH said 93 new recoveries were recorded in the country.

The number of Covid-19 survivors has now reached a total of 65,265. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
