PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) Chief Archie Gamboa has ordered the temporary suspension of all the activities for new cadets in the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) after another cadet died.

Two cadets have died in a span of three days.

Cadet Fourth Class Jiary Papa died on July 10 of electrolyte imbalance or hypokalemia (low potassium intake). On July 8, Cadet Fourth Class Kenneth Ross Alvarado died from heat stroke.

Based on Papa’s logbook, she requested permission to go to the comfort room at 2:30 a.m. and later went back to sleep.

After about an hour, she woke up to prepare for early morning activity but suddenly collapsed beside her bunk.

Gamboa said Papa was immediately brought to the Academy Health Service by duty cadets. AHS staff then rushed her to Qualimed Hospital in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

At 4:34 a.m., Papa was declared dead.

PNPA Director Jose Chiquito Malayo said all activities for the members of the PNPA Class of 2024 will be suspended until further evaluation and assessment.

Gamboa assured the families of the two cadets that they will receive the financial assistance due to new members of the PNPA Cadetship Program, including insurance protection and benefits from the Public Safety Mutual Benefit Fund, Inc. (Third Anne Peralta-Malonzo/SunStar Philippines)
