FOR the first time since the start of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic, officials of the Quiapo Church in Manila has allowed the "pahalik" of the image of the Black Nazarene.

In a radio interview, Quiapo Church Parochial Vicar Fr. Douglas Badong said they have already allowed the "pahalik" (kissing) for the first time since early 2020.

"Devotees may once again touch the image of the Black Nazarene located above the main altar of the Quiapo Church," said Badong.

"Slowly, we shall bring back the tradition of 'pahalik'," he added.

The priest, though, strongly appealed to the public to continue adhering to the minimum public health standards.

"We appeal to our devotees to queue properly and observe the safety protocols," said Badong.

To recall, the Quiapo Church stopped the "pahalik" activities as soon as the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Even during the Traslacion 2021 and 2022, the "pahalik" tradition was replaced by the practice of "pagtanaw" (viewing). (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
