THE Department of Health (DOH) on Monday, July 13, 2020, said cases of coronavirus infection and recoveries exceeded 57,000 and 20,000, respectively, while mortalities neared 1,600.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, DOH’s case bulletin no. 121 showed a total of 57,006 cases in the country, including 836 newly validated cases.

Of the total, 35,036 are active cases, fewer than the 38,679 active cases reported in the previous case bulletin as some cases were confirmed to have either recovered or expired.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said 4,325 additional recoveries were reported, which brought the total number of recovered patients to 20,371.

The agency also listed 65 additional mortalities, raising the death toll to 1,599. Only nine occurred in July, 54 in June, and two in previous months.

Of the 65, Vergeire said 59 came from Central Visayas. Of the nine fatalities in July, six were from Cebu.

Among the 836 new cases, 749 are fresh cases based on reports from 57 testing laboratories while 87 are late cases.

Fresh cases refer to test results that were released in the last three days while late cases are those that were released at least four days ago but were validated only in the last 24 hours.

Of the total active cases, 92.2 percent or more than nine out of 10 are mild cases while 7.1 percent, or seven out of 100, are asymptomatic.

Four of every 1,000 cases (0.4 percent) are severely ill while three out of every 1,000 cases (0.3 percent) are in critical condition. (Marites Villamor-Ilano/SunStar Philippines)
