THE National Bilibid Prisons (NBP) in Muntinlupa City has transferred 200 convicts to Zamboanga City on Saturday, an official said.

NBP Superintendent Antonio Cruz said the convicts, transferred Saturday to the San Ramon Penal Colony, arrived in the city aboard a commercial ferry coming from Manila.

Cruz said the transfer is part of NBP's decongestion program at the national penitentiary citing the population of convicts is continuously increasing.

Cruz added other convicts at the national penitentiary will be sent to other penal colonies in the country.

Some of the 200 convicts transferred to the San Ramon Penal Colony are natives of Zamboanga City while the rest from the different parts of Mindanao, Cruz said.

The convicts were transferred to the city as the San Ramon Penal Colony has enough room to accommodate the prisoners, Cruz added. (Bong Garcia)
