TOURISTS may soon be able to pedal around Cebu City once the Cebu City Government establishes bike lanes around tourist attractions.

The Cebu City Sugbo Bike Lanes Board initially planned to have the tourist route available during off peak hours on weekends and weekdays, but it is a good start for bike enthusiasts and nature conservationists.

The board also approved lanes for those who bike to work or school every day and for those who pedal for recreation.

Joel Lee of Tindak Sugbo Coalition said that commuter bike routes will be established on the Katipunan-Banawa area.

The recreational route will be established on a 20-kilometer loop in the South Road Properties (SRP).

Councilor Gerardo Carillo, head of the Sugbo Bike Lanes Board, said the recreational route will be from the Mambaling Access Road to the seaside area, then to Duljo Fatima service road then back to Mambaling.

He said that the recreational routes will also include trails to eco-tourism sites in the mountain barangays.

He said that bike lanes will also be established along roads to Guadalupe, Sapangdaku, Pamutan, Toong and Buhisan, Kalunasan, Guba and Busay.

The creation of the bike lanes board and establishment of bike lanes are offshoots of the passage of City Ordinance 2408, also known as the Sugbo Bike Lanes Ordinance that was authored by Councilor Nida Cabrera. It was passed last October.

Carillo said they will discuss when to implement the ordinance during bike summit on June 20 and 21 in Dumanjug, Cebu. Fifty representatives of different bikers’ association are expected to attend.

After the summit, Cabrera said Citom will start marking the roads where bike lanes will be established.

The funding for the establishment of bike lanes will come from the Annual Investment Plan.
