Companies urged to consider over-age workers

ANGELES CITY -- A city councilor here is urging companies here and inside the Clark Freeport to consider over-age applicants in their hiring.

Councilor Rudy Simeon said he filed a proposed ordinance that will require business firms not to impose a rigid age limit policy on job applicants.

Several companies, according to Simeon, implement a rigid age limit policy, which discriminates old job seekers.

“That is absolutely discriminatory. Kawawa naman ang ating mga kababayan na gustong magtrabaho pero hindi natatanggap sa mga pabrika at kumpanya kasi overage na daw sila,” Simeon said.

At present, many firms are including in their applicant requirements an age bracket of 18 to 23 years old but for Simeon, the age policy on job applicants should be 18 to 55 years old.

The city councilor also said he is planning to include in the penal clause the revocation of business permit of companies that will be violating the ordinance.

Mayor Francis “Blueboy” Nepomuceno said he will support the move of Simeon saying age should not be a reason to deprive a person who is seeking livelihood.

Simeon said he already asked officials of Clark Development Corporation (CDC) to require locators and firms to hire qualified workers regardless of their age.
