MANILA -- A cargo ship capsized off Claveria town in Cagayan Province Friday, but all 22 Koreans on board were able to swim to safety, a police official said.
One of the Koreans, Ho Chol Jon, was injured. He was brought to Agra Clinic in Claveria town for treatment. The remaining 21 stayed at the residence of the village chieftain.
Cagayan Valley Police Director Roberto Damian said the group--led by ship captain Jon Ki Ung--reached the shoreline of Taggat Norte village in Claveria town around 7 a.m. after abandoning ship.
The ship, carrying magnetite, left the port of Appari at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Around 9 p.m. and approximately 6 nautical miles off Taggat Norte, the ship listed to its left side “because of the unbalanced wet magnetite.”
Damian said the Koreans abandoned their vessel around 3 p.m. and swam for land with their life jackets on. (VR/Sunnex)
