MANILA—Akbayan Representative Risa Hontiveros said in a press briefing Wednesday she will appeal Supreme Court (SC) decision in junking the disqualification case filed against President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

The high tribunal dismissed the petition filed by Hontiveros, who questioned the legality of the chief executive to run for congresswoman.

The SC ruling stated that there’s no moral legal barrier for the president’s bid for congressional seat in Pampanga.

SC spokesperson Lawyer Midas Marquez said the SC en banc did not see any violation in the Commission on Elections’ acceptance of Arroyo’s certificate of candidacy.

“With the election just around the corner…we don’t want any issues about the candidates left hanging,” Marquez said.

The SC, a day after its decision on the disqualification case, ordered the appointed officials in the Malacañang, who plans of running for an electoral post in May, to resign otherwise face disqualification.

Hontiveros, however, said the SC order is an irony on the situation of the president who holds the highest access of power in the government.

She said their group will not allow Arroyo to win a seat in the House of Representatives. (Sunnex)
