THE Mandaue City Sports Commission (MSCS) will hold the 3rd Mayor Jonas Cortes Cup 2010 this Saturday.
MCSC executive director and lawyer Hidelito Pascual said there will be 11 events in the event. Seven of the events will be for Mandaue City residents only.
Pascual was joined by executive committee members Glenn Bercede, lawyers Ernesto Maringuran and Eliseo Ceniza and the guest of honor, world billiard champion player Rubilen Amit during the press conference yesterday.
“Out of the 27 barangays in Mandaue City, 24 will join. Some of these barangays were subsidized by the City for their uniforms,” said Pascual
Pascual said basketball, volleyball, “dayondayon” volleyball, badminton, chess, amateur boxing and gate ball will be exclusive for Mandaue City residents while softball, table tennis, lawn tennis and the 21K Mandaue City Run are the events that are either open to all or have divisions open for non-Mandaue City residents.
The basketball competition, the centerpiece of the event, will have four divisions--the midget (13-under), Juniors (17-under), seniors A (active and current varsity and commercial players) and seniors B (for inactive commercial and ex-varsity players).
Lawn tennis, on the other hand, will be a Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) sanctioned event and will have five categories—men’s open, juniors, inter-club, veterans and special category.
“The sole purpose of this competition is to find gems among the current athletes in Mandaue City,” said Pascual.
