POLICE have arrested one of the two suspects behind the attempt on the life of a village chief in Zamboanga City, a police official said Wednesday.

Capisan village Chief Cerelito Atienza suffered a bullet wound in the nape while his son, Russel, escaped unscathed when they were shot by the suspects around 6 a.m. Tuesday in Capisan, an upland village located 15 kilometers west of Zamboanga City.

Senior Inspector Felixberto Martinez, Police Station 7 chief, said the suspect, whose identity was withheld, was arrested Tuesday evening in the village of Tumaga.

Martinez said the arrested suspect was recognized by witnesses, who provided the police the description in coming out with an artist sketch.

Martinez said manhunt continues to arrest the other suspect who is still at large.

He added that investigation continues to unmask the possible mastermind of the incident, citing the motive has something to do with the work of Atienza.

Atienza and his son were aboard a motorcycle coming from the village of San Roque when the incident happened. (Bong Garcia)
