Search teams recover body of Filipino United Nations worker (8:05 a.m.)

MANILA -- The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) confirmed Tuesday the death of a Filipino civilian staff of the United Nations (UN) in last weeks magnitude 7 earthquake in Haiti.

In a statement, the DFA said search teams in Haiti recovered the body of 43-year-old Jerome Yap, administrative officer of the Principal Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Haiti, at 6:15 p.m. Monday (RP time).

Yap, who is among the 40 Filipinos with the UN international staff, has been an employee of the organization for 15 years.

The statement said the DFA has already informed his family in Pampanga province as well in the United States.
