Sonsona, Morales get time off

AFTER their embarrassing losses in world title fights, young boxers Marvin Sonsona and Ciso Morales will get some time off to reflect on their careers.

Sonsona, 19, was knocked out by Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. in the fourth round with a devastating liver shot in their World Boxing Organization (WBO) super bantamweight match last Feb. 27, while the 22-year-old Morales was floored by WBO bantamweight titlist Fernando Montiel in the first round on Feb. 14.

“As of now, I’m giving them both a vacation. I’m giving them time to review what direction they want in life,” the two boxers’ promoter, Samson Gello-ani, told Sun.Star Cebu.

Gello-ani said that Morales has hinted on walking away from the sport, while Sonsona is committed to continue boxing.

Gello-ani said if both youngsters want to continue, they have to make a lot of adjustments regarding their outlook on the sport.

“I’ve already given them a break. I did my job as a promoter,” said Gello-ani. “Sonsona has to mature and focus on his training. He has to have a total change in attitude towards his profession. Ciso is still young also. He has to have the courage to go all out.”

Both Sonsona and Morales trained under Nonito Donaire Sr. at the Kennel Boxing Gym in San Leandro, California.
