THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) said its directive for vehicles to shift to cashless toll payment in expressways is a means to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

The contactless mode of payment limits human interaction and ensure a more efficient and faster flow of traffic.

Despite the readiness of toll operators to accommodate electronic toll payments, the DOTr extended the deadline from November 2 to November 30.

This is in response to the clamor of motorists for more time to adjust to the new policy.

DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade allowed the extension to give motorists time to comply with the order.

The move is also expected to prevent long queues at toll plazas due to the last-minute attempt of toll road users to get the RFID stickers.

The adjustment in time frame manifests the government's willingness to listen to the public -- the toll road users, according to the agency.

"Now that government has extended the deadline in consideration of the request, motorists should use this leeway wisely," the DOTR added.

As the 100 percent cashless toll collection takes effect on December 1, motorists are advised to equip their vehicles with the RFID stickers.

"For when the electronic toll collection is fully implemented, going through the toll roads will be a breeze. Our expressways will really be express," the DOTR said.
