Outgoing Leyte prison chief survives attack

THE outgoing chief of the Leyte Regional Prison, together with his men, were ambushed by still unidentified gunmen in Barangay Cadac-an in Abuyog, Leyte, just before noontime Monday, August 6.

Superintendent Geraldo Aro, who was seated at the backseat, only sustained wounds in some parts of his body, initial report from the police stated.

Some of his companions were killed.

The fatalities were identified as jail personnel Jelanie Almario, Randy Pantano, and Nelson Padagdag.

They were onboard a white patrol car owned by the prison facility.

A source said that Aro is heading to Tacloban to catch his flight.

The incident happened after the formal turnover ceremony of the new corrections chief at the prison facility around 9 a.m.

Based on the Bureau of Corrections special order date July 25 signed by Director Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa, Aro is being transferred to Sablayan Prison and Penal Farm in Mindoro Occidental.
