Soldier shoots buddy dead after mistaking him for ‘aswang’

AN ENLISTED army personnel killed a Cafgu member after he mistook the latter for an “aswang” during their drinking session in Ormoc City Monday, January 13.

The suspect was identified as Staff Sergeant Aldrin Madrid, 37, married, and a resident of Victoria, Northern Samar.

The incident took place at about 12:30 a.m. Monday at the Site A Detachment D Coy 93 Infantry Battalion in Sitio Mahanagdong, Barangay Tongonan, Ormoc.

Police said Madrid was having a drinking session with Citizen Armed Force Geographical Unit (Cafgu) personnel Jomar Yubal, 24, and two other Cafgu members when the suspect had a hallucination and allegedly saw an “aswang”.

The suspect fired using his issued Glock firearm to the said “aswang” who died on the spot.

However, it turned out to be Yubal, a resident of Capoocan, Leyte, police said.

Suspect was arrested by Staff Seargent Froilan Tarranza and was turned over to the responding police officers. (SunStar Philippines)
