2 cops die, 4 hurt in highway mishap

TWO policemen died, while four others were hurt in a vehicular accident in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay, the police reported Tuesday, December 17.

Police Major Helen Galvez, Police Regional Office-Zamboanga Peninsula information officer, said the accident took place around 6:30 p.m. Monday, December 16, in Purok 3, Barangay Guilawa, Malangas, Zamboanga Sibugay.

Galvez identified the fatalities as Police Corporal Jourecel Jake Celestial, 30, and Police Patrolman Alexander Laquinon, who both belong to the 9th Regional Mobile Force Battalion's 903rd Maneuver Company based in Camp Del Castillo in the town of Malangas.

Wounded and hospitalized were Police Patrolman Stephen Ray Alicando, 23; Police Patrolman Logie Servo, 24; Police Corporal Rommel Apiong; and Police Patrolman Arcel Matugas.

Galvez said investigation showed that Aipong lost control of the sports utility vehicle's (SUV's) steering wheel, causing the SUV to overshoot on a curved road and crash on mahogany trees while traveling to Diplahan from Malangas.

She said the SUV further plunged into the opposite side of the road and crashed on a parked motorcycle, resulting in the instantaneous death of Celestial and Laquinon. (SunStar Zamboanga)
