TWO people were killed while 38 others were wounded when a passenger jeep fell into a ditch and overturned in a remote village in Zamboanga City, the police said Saturday, November 3.

The Police Station 4 of the Zamboanga City Police Office (ZCPO) reported the incident happened around 7 a.m. Saturday in Lanzones village with fatalities identified as Amir Dela Cruz and Elvis Delos Reyes.

Investigation showed the passenger jeep driven by Dessie John Enriquez was loaded with cargo and passengers traveling to the city proper when the incident happened.

Enriquez told the police the brake of the jeep malfunctioned while they were on a descending road prompting him to apply engine brake by shifting to low gear but to no avail.

The driver lost control of the steering wheel as he was forced to shift to a high gear that caused the jeep to fall into a ditch.

The police said some of the passengers were pinned down and some were thrown off the vehicle.

Enriquez voluntarily surrendered to the police after the incident. (SunStar Philippines)
