THE Community Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) in Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte conducted Philippine Ducks monitoring Saturday, October 9, in Kalawit Lake, Kalawit.

Rosevirico Tan, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) regional information officer, said Monday, October 11, that the monitoring of Philippine Ducks is part of the celebration of the World Migratory Bird's Day 2021 of Cenro-Liloy's Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Unit (Pambcu).

The Philippine duck is rated vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

The species has experienced steep population decreases since the 1970s mainly due to hunting and habitat loss.

Tan said the World Migratory Bird Day is an annual global campaign dedicated to raising awareness of migratory birds and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.

He said the DENR-Zamboanga Peninsula expressed the vital roles of birds to the ecosystem and encourages everyone to help in its protection and conservation.

This year's World Migratory Bird's Day 2021 is anchored on the theme "Sing, Fly, Soar-Like a Bird." (SunStar Zamboanga)
