City gov’t gears for ‘Dia de Zamboanga’ festival

THE Zamboanga City Government announced that the registration for several “Dia de Zamboanga” competitions is ongoing.

Mayor Maria Isabellel Climaco-Salazar said that the local government prepared a month-long line up of activities, events, and competitions to celebrate the 82nd Dia de Zamboanga on February 26 at the newly-rehabilitated Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex.

Salazar said that the registrations are still open for the lined-up competitions.

These include the Zamboanga Film Fest 2019, with submission deadline on February 8; the Zamboanga Hip Hop Competition 2019, with video audition deadline on February 6, and; the Local Achievers Award, with submission deadline on February 15.

The mayor said the line-up of activities will lead up to the grand celebration of the 82nd Dia de Zamboanga on February 26, an occasion which marks the day when the first set of city officials headed by Mayor Nicasio Valderoza was installed into office on February 26, 1937, four months after President Manuel L. Quezon approved the Charter of Zamboanga on October 12, 1936.

She said the much anticipated highlight will be the Dia de Zamboanga celebration proper which will herald the awaited re-opening of the rehabilitated Joaquin Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex.

The sports complex undergone a rehabilitation as it was damaged when it was used as the biggest evacuation center when the September 2013 siege broke out.

Salazar said the 82nd Dia de Zamboanga celebration will bring to the newly opened sports complex the main program, the Local Achievers Award, the Drum and Lyre Competition, and the Open Cheerdance Competition.

The chief executive said among the activities are performance, and dance and music festivities like Zambo Love Fest from February 4 to 26 at the Plaza Pershing; the Pot Painting Public Art Project from February 4 to 10 at Mayor Climaco Avenue; the Zamboanga Hip Hop Dance Competition; Zamboanga Graffiti Competition; Zamboanga Film Festival; and, the Zamboanga Music Runvolution.
