Vice mayor: Check background before hiring babysitters

Merlinda A. Pedrosa

BACOLOD City Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran urged parents to double check the record of their hired babysitter to ensure the safety of their children.

The advice came after a 19-year-old babysitter was earlier arrested in Miag-ao town in Iloilo province for allegedly kidnapping a one-year-old boy from Bacolod City.

“It’s an isolated case, but we should be careful in hiring of babysitter,” Familiaran said.

He said the parents should check or require a police clearance, National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) clearance to determine the true identity or if she/he has criminal records.

“Before hiring them, we should check the background to avoid similar incidents. We should know its resident and relatives so that we can locate them in case of a problem,” he added.

On April 16, Airesh Martir of Barangay Mandalagan was arrested in Miag-ao after she allegedly took the child without the consent of her employers.

Policemen were able to trace the location of the child through Martir’s Facebook account, where she posted some photos of them in Iloilo.
