Farmer hacks to death own son over misunderstanding

INSTEAD of happily celebrating Father's Day on June 19, a farmer is languishing behind bars a day after he hacked to death his own son due to a misunderstanding at the mountainous area of Barangay Maaslob, about 10 kilometers from the town proper of Calatrava, Negros Occidental.

Major Lidawan Lumayen, Police chief of Calatrava, said the suspect, Rubico Bini Sr., 65, of the barangay's Sitio Hakpan, regretted what he has done but his other son is not willing to forgive him.

Witnesses said Carlito Bini, 42, confronted his father when he heard the sound of a chainsaw and saw the latter cutting Gemilina trees in their yard around 10 a.m. Saturday, June 18.

A heated argument ensued between them after the younger Bini claimed that he owns the tree, witnesses added.

Investigation showed that the victim drew his bolo and hacked his father's left hand and face, while the suspect, in retaliation, did the same to his son, hitting him on both knees.

Lumayen said the elder Bini then fled after the incident but was arrested in a hot pursuit operation about six hours later near their residence.

The younger Bini died upon arrival at the Calatrava District Hospital, he said.

Lumayen added that the bolos of both the victim and the suspect were recovered from the crime scene.

The police official noted that Rubico Bini Jr., the suspect's other son, will file parricide charges against his father.
