THE whole province is safe from the African Swine Flu.

The assurance was made by Provincial Veterinarian Dr. Renante Decena amid the attack of African Swine Flu on hog farms in China and neighboring Southeast Asian countries.

According to Decena, the virus has brought damages to the hog raising industry in other countries recently.

Based on studies conducted by veterinarians, the infection is thought to have been caused by an Ornithodoros, a type of soft-bodied tick. The hogs are infected if they are bitten by the tick which then contaminates their blood.

Decena clarified that the virus has no effect to humans, although there is a need for strict monitoring at airports and seaports in order for the virus not to enter the country.

He also advised consumers to avoid buying pork products from China, Hong Kong and Vietnam.
