Oro council amends plastic bag ordinance

PJ Orias

THE City Council has amended the Solid Waste Management ordinance deleting a provision which entails that the plastic bag use should only be in effect on Wednesdays and Fridays.

City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (Clenro) Engineer Armen Cuenca earlier pushed to change the provision as this was used by some establishments as an excuse not to implement.

During the first week of the implementation, Cuenca said some malls refused to implement the law because of this certain provision. But Cuenca explained that the Wednesdays and Fridays schedule is only set for the dry run of the campaign.

After the dry run, the ecobag campaign should be implemented everyday.

"In some way, makalusot sila because of the provision that's why we have it amended," he said.

Now that the provision is deleted, he said establishments should now adopt the eco-bag use religiously.

Meanwhile, the city is also set to implement the anti-littering ordinance.

Clenro has called the attention of a convenience store earlier this week after throwing its trash in a canal in Corrales street.

Cuenca said they will face penalty amounting to P2,000 including a community service.
