Apo rescinds layoff order

IT’S a happy Christmas after all for employees of the Apo Cement Corp.

This, after the company decided to cancel its plan to lay off some of its employees, which was supposed to take effect on Dec. 13, Thursday.

Chito Maniago, Apo-Cemex spokesperson, told SunStar Cebu they have cancelled the plan to lay off some of their workers after the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) convinced them to do so.

Maniago confirmed they received a series of letters from DOLE 7 Director Johnson Cañete.

Apo Cement and its partner, Cemex Philippines, decided to lay off some of their employees after their operations were affected following the suspension of the raw material supplier, Apo Land and Quarry Corp. The latter was involved in a deadly landslide in Barangay Tina-an, City of Naga last Sept. 20, which claimed the lives of 78 people.

Maniago said they held a town hall session with their employees last Tuesday to discuss on the decision to no longer proceed with the lay-off. (JKV)
