CEBU City Mayor Edgardo Labella suspended the mandatory registration of bicycles and the prohibition on their use on Cebu City streets effective Saturday, June 6, 2020.

The mayor also suspended indefinitely the requirement of driver's identification card (ID) for drivers of public utility vehicles (PUVs) plying the streets.

"Taking into consideration the welfare of the Cebuanos, the requirement on mandatory registration of bicycles and prohibition of their use in Cebu City streets are suspended indefinitely, effective today (Saturday). Further, requirement of Driver’s ID for drivers of public utility vehicles plying Cebu City streets are likewise suspended indefinitely," the mayor said in a Facebook post.

Labella directed the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) to implement the orders and facilitate the unimpeded operation of all types of PUV in the city with special permits issued by the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board.

Earlier Saturday, CCTO spokesperson Ronnie Nadera reminded bicycle riders to have their bikes registered as a measure to ensure their safety on the road. Labella’s order supersedes Nadera’s reminder.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen the whole country under community quarantine, riding bicycles has become a common sight as an alternative mode of transportation. (JJL)
