Company manager accidentally shoots stay-in helper

A STAY-IN helper was killed after the manager of their company accidentally pulled the trigger at 7:54 p.m. on Sunday, April 5, 2020, inside their office in Sitio Latasan, Brgy. Labogon, Mandaue City.

The suspect was identified as Nelsas Sabarita, 32, a temporary resident of Hermag Village l, Brgy. Pagsabungan, Mandaue City, operations manager of a company.

PSMS Allain Carado, the desk officer on duty at the Basak Police Station, told Sunstar Cebu that during their initial investigation, Sabarita voluntarily surrendered to Basak police with a 45 Colt pistol without a magazine.

He told police he accidentally shot Oliver Jo, 42, a stay-in helper at their company and a native of Bogo City, Cebu.

The investigation revealed that Sabarita, along with the victim and their other co-workers, were cleaning the firearm.

Sabarita and Jo disassembled and reassembled the weapon but Sabarita accidentally pulled the trigger and hit the victim, resulting to Jo’s instantaneous death.

Sabarita claimed that the weapon belonged to him and that he carried the weapon for self-defense.

The victim was rushed to Eversley Childs Sanitarium General Hospital.

Jo’s family had already taken his body to Bogo.

Sabarita will be charged with homicide and violation of Republic Act 10951 or illegal possession of firearms because the gun was not registered.

Meanwhile, Sabarita is detained at the Basak Police Station. (KFD)
