A CONSTRUCTION worker was about to cross the national highway in Sitio Cogon, Barangay Catarman in the northern town of Liloan, Cebu on Monday night, October 3, 2022, when he was struck by a pickup truck.

Roberto Canoy, a 54-year-old widower from Barangay Don Andres Soriano, Toledo City, sustained severe injuries and died two hours later in the hospital.

The driver, Roger Ancajas, a 53-year-old resident of Purok Alugbati, Sitio Tiwasan, Barangay Catarman, was detained by police.

Staff Sergeant Louie Castillo, traffic investigator of the Liloan Police Station, said he learned that Canoy usually had coffee in an eatery across the street from he worked around 7 p.m.

Castillo said Canoy was about to return to the construction site when the incident took place around 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Ancajas, who was driving north, told the investigator he couldn’t avoid hitting Canoy no matter how hard he pressed on the brakes because the victim suddenly crossed his path.

The force of the impact threw Canoy several meters. His body rolled under a sports utility vehicle driven by Alejandre Giangan, a 58-year-old resident of Barangay Luyang in the neighboring town of Carmen.

Ancajas rushed Canoy to a hospital in Danao City where the latter eventually died.

Castillo said they are waiting for the victim’s family to file a case against the driver. (GPL)
