La Salle beat St. Benilde to enter finals

UNIVERSITY of St. La Salle (USLS) will return to the championship match of the men’s football competition in the ongoing 2017 University Games after beating De La Salle-College of St. Benilde, 2-1 in Friday’s semi-finals at the Gov. Mariano Perdices Coliseum in Dumaguete City.

It was a tough game for the Stingers but Regie Cisneros’s goal in the 76th minute and Harunori Aoki’s penalty in the 110th minute in the extension period bailed out the Bacolod-based booters.

En route the semis, the Stingers also survived De La Salle University-Manila, 2-1 on goals from Aoki (10’) and Kenneth Paul Infante (12’).

In the elimination, USLS also defeated erstwhile defending champion University of the Philippines behind Tristan Kit Robles’ goal.

National University Bulldogs will appear in the finals after defeating UP in the other semis match.

In men’s basketball, Rizal Technological University scored convincing victories in the ongoing UniGames with a close win over STI West Negros University, 90-86 and spanking Asian College of Science and Technology (Acsat), 75-58.

The STI WNU Mustangs earlier survived Holy Angels University in overtime, 105-87 after regulation, 82-all. HAU later bounced back with an 85-74 win over Acsat.

Meanwhile, the RTU lady cagers also dominated the women’s event with a 93-17 demolition of Silliman University and a 71-44 triumph against Negros Oriental State University. (HGD)
