Mayor favors placing city under Comelec control

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said he's ready to follow orders from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for a peaceful conduct of the May polls in the city.

"I've said it before; if they want they can have the city under Comelec control. I will take my order from them," Duterte said after the command conference he arranged following the discovery of two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) Thursday afternoon.

"Kung walang baril akong dadalhin, okay lang rin," he said.

Duterte, who reassumed his position as police supervisor Thursday night, said he also finds it a smart move to put the city's law enforcing bodies to follow the Comelec rule.

He, however, said that his submission to Comelec rule would have limitations.

"I will follow their orders as long as it is within my duty. Hindi nila ako pwedeng utusan to do or not to do something that is not (fit) for my position," the mayor said.

"If they want they can supervise me the same way as I supervise the police, but beyond that they should not stop me from doing my job," Duterte added.

With the discovery of two IEDs at separate locations, Duterte said the Task Force Davao and Davao City Police Office have to work triple.

“That incident should not happen again, especially now na eleksyon," Duterte said. (Jade C. Zaldivar)
