MANILA – The Philippines bids goodbye in its campaign for gold in the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore after tanker Jessie Lacuna failed to advance in the 200-meter butterfly.

The country’s three-on-three basketball team, on the other hand, has to be contented with a possible ninth place finish at the start of consolation phase on Saturday.

Lacuna only placed fifth in the second of three heats in two minutes and 6.38 seconds, to wound up at 15th overall.

The 16-year-old Bulacan pride competed in the 100m free—his second event—Thursday but wound up only at 19th place in a 54-swimmer field.

The champion swimmer however made the cut in the eight-man finals of the 200m free but ended up finishing last.

Jasmine Alkhaldi, for her part, finished 17th in the 50m free in 27.10 seconds.

The Filipinos had a discouraging but gallant battle as netter Jeson Patrombon, taekwondo jin Kirk Barbosa, weightlifter Patricia Llena all fell by the wayside. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
