LET it be said that the notion of Filipinos being poor in math is a thing of the past, as another Kapampangan has joined the ever-increasing number of talents making a mark in mathematics competitions.

This as Grade 9 Euan Gabriel F. Bautista of the Pampanga High School won a Gold Award in the Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad 2019 (Sasmo) held recently.

Bautista is among the gold winners for Grade 8 results. Bautista ranks Gold 79 in the overall ranking for the said grade category.

Sasmo is a math Olympiad that stretches the potential not only of brightest students but is aimed at instilling confidence among all students. Participating countries include the Philippines, Bulgaria, China, Cambodia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Vietnam and Thailand, among others.

The contest is designed in a way to make every student love math again.

Sasmo fits nicely into the school curriculum with a high focus on non-routine problem sums.

Created in 2006, Sasmo is one of largest math contests in Asia. It has expanded from 155 local participants in 2006 to more than 20,000 participants from 19 countries in Sasmo 2018.

With realistic and high standards, Sasmo contests aim to stretch the untapped thinking potential of the student population. Their participation in Sasmo will help them improve in school mathematics as well as higher order thinking skills.
