8 arrested for illegal fishing

AUTHORITIES have arrested eight people for illegal fishing in the water of Leon Postigo, Zamboanga del Norte, the police said Tuesday, March 31.

The Zamboanga del Norte Police Provincial Office identified the arrested fishermen as follows: Marjun Borongan, 30, master fisherman; and crewmen namely, James Dela Cruz, 20; Stevenzahn Ramos, 20; Jeoffrey Borongan, 19; Kevin Jay Cabilin, 19; Eduardo Ramos, Jr., 19; Dominador Lagarnia, III, 19; and, Bernabe Taping, 24.

The police said they were arrested by joint team of policemen and sea watchmen around 6:20 p.m. Monday in the sea water of Bogabongan, Leon Postigo, Zamboanga Del Norte.

The police said the joint team arrested the eight fishermen following information that a commercial fishing boat was engaged in illegal fishing off Bogabongan, Leon Postigo.

Seized from the fishermen were 40 kilograms of fish of assorted species and fishing gears, the police added.

The fishermen as well as their fishing boat were placed under the custody of the Leon Postigo municipal agriculture office for proper disposition. (SunStar Zamboanga)
