Zambo athletes shine in Muay Thai, wrestling, swimming

THE muay thai, wrestling and swimming teams of Zamboanga City harvested medals in recent competitions held in Laguna and Davao, respectively.

Dr. Cecile Atilano, city sports development officer, said that the Zamboanga delegation to the 3rd Muay Thai National Championship 2018 brought home six gold medals.

Atilano said the muay thai delegation included Diongson Rey Vincent, Egoogan Fritzel, Angelo Gilo, Noel Alabata, Prince Ian Berdon, Jose Catipunan, and Jeromie Balaocol. The head coach is Severino Siglos and assistant coach is Maria Ruzen Siglos.

She said the athletes of this city were among the best performers out of the total 368 participants from the National Capital Region, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

The wrestling team harvested medals in the recently concluded South East Asia (SEA) Senior Wrestling Championship 2018 held in San Pablo, Laguna, from November 5 to 10, Atilano added.

The sports official said the medalists included the following: Margarito Angana, 60 kilogram (kg) cat-gold; Jhonny Morte, 61 kg cat-bronze; Jonathan Maquilan, 63 kg cat- silver; Joseph Angana, 65 kg cat-bronze; Anthony Pajaron, 70 kg cat-bronze; and, Francis Villanueva, 97 kg cat-bronze.

Meanwhile, she said the Zamboanga City Swimming delegation to the 2018 Grand Prix Qualifying Series Mindanao held in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, from November 3 to 4 also brought honor and fame to this city.

She added that the swimming team hauled 18 gold, 20 silver and 27 bronze medals. (SunStar Philippines)
